My husband’s debut novel comes out to the world on Monday. I have watched over his shoulder as these characters changed and grew over the last several years. And now, in just a couple days, they will “come to life” and you will get to meet them too. Hard to believe. I am so proud of @john_enger and the brave work he has done. ❤️❤️❤️ @enger_grove

Thank you, Ms. Wharton, for this delightful, still-relevant quote!

Edith Wharton was a wealthy woman who loved travel, though her work often mocks the aristocracy. Her maiden name was Jones and--rumor has it--the saying "keeping up with the Joneses" is thought to have been about her father's family. Wharton herself, in addition to being a writer, was an interior designer and was considered a taste-maker in her day.

A few interesting facts:

👉🏻As a divorced woman, Wharton was the victim of much personal criticism.

👉🏻When WWI broke out, she moved from the U.S. to her Paris apartment and volunteered for the war effort in many ways, including setting up refugee shelters.

👉🏻She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in literature (in 1921).

👉🏻She received an honorary doctorate from Yale.

👉🏻She is included in the National Women's Hall of Fame.

So much has really not changed at all... 💔

Margaret Fuller was an early women's rights advocate. In addition to being a poet and essayist, she was also an editor, teacher, newspaper correspondent and literary reviewer. Many early American feminists were inspired by her. She was the first editor of "The Dial," the transcendentalist paper of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Some believe that Nathaniel Hawthorne used her attitude and personality as the inspiration for his famous heroine Hester Prynne in "The Scarlet Letter."

"Summer on the Lake" is an anthropological travelogue of Fuller's journey across the Great Lakes region and is also a defense of Native American people, many of whom she met on her trip.

Fuller died tragically at the age of 40. On a voyage returning to the U.S. from Europe, Fuller, her husband and their two year old son all perished in a shipwreck only 100 yards from New York's shoreline. Henry David Thoroeau traveled to New York to help search for her body. But her son's body was the only one of her family that was ever recovered.
