Something a little more modern this week!

Madeleine L'Engle is best known for the YA classic, “A Wrinkle in Time” (1962). She was a prolific author, writing across genres--adult and YA fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.

She is known for writing during the demanding years of early motherhood and talking about the importance of creative moms to continue to pursue their writing.

"Penguins and Golden Calves" is a reflection of spirituality and nature during a rafting trip L’Engle made to Antarctica, despite protest from family and friends. Why did her family disapprove of her adventurous travel? She was in her late 70s at the time! #badass

Today’s quote is not only timely in regards to the book banning we are seeing today, it is also a good summary of her experience as a writer. L’Engle certainly knew about censorship—something she got from multiple directions. Her books were often banned for their spiritual themes. L’Engle was a devout Episcopal who practiced a form of Christian Universalism. Many secular audiences found her writing too spiritual. However, most censorship of L’Engle’s work came from her fellow-Christians who balked at her open theology and the inclusion of witches, magic and other “non-Christian” elements in her fantasy stories.

Social media (all the platforms) are a mess. They are unreliable and frustrating. And they generate “likes” but not sales.

You would get more success for your effort by:

👉🏻 Focusing on getting reader reviews on your sales platforms (Amazon, Goodreads, your website and anywhere your book is for sale)

👉🏻 Getting your book listed in book promotion email lists that go to readers of your genre

👉🏻 Building relationships with booksellers (YES, people are shopping at independent bookstores again!)

👉🏻 Focusing on publicity (getting interviewed by podcasts and other media.)
