Still Learning

My husband gets mad when I mourn the loss of our “newlywed” status, so I will refrain from belaboring my sincere sorrow, instead of delight, at the passing of our first anniversary. Know that the sorrow is there, however. Much as Hubby harps about “newlywed” being an attitude and state of mind, I and everyone else know that it is defined as couples married within 12 months ago, therefore, as of last month (June 18th), he and I no longer qualify.

Being married a year now, you’d think I would have the whole “housewife” thing down. I’ve certainly improved many parts of my life that the hectic schedule of college and relationships let slide. My chicken is no longer dry. I experiment with new hairstyles. I’ve even worked my dish washing schedule down to an efficient science.

But within each of those victories, occasional stupidity still arises. Like the banana bread I had to throw in the trash yesterday. The good news being I finally learned that yes, slight amount though it may be, baking soda is still a necessary ingredient. (Honestly, I cannot be the only person who wonders, each time she adds that 1/4 tsp into the dry ingredients, how much difference it really makes!) It was not meant as an experiment, though. Per the instructions, the baking soda had been dissolved in the hot water but, when I picked up the liquid measuring cup to wash post-production, wouldn’t you know the water was still in there while my  bread was already rising (well…not rising) in the oven. Just an FYI…the bread was still flavorful, but was only appetizing for about two hours before it de-evolutionized to resemble its hard, caveman-era ancestors.

And so, the latest update on the Engers a-year-and-some after our wedding: We’re still married, even more in love, and–my friends should be thrilled to know–I’m still absent-minded enough to continue making all the comical mistakes you know me for.
