If you've followed me for long, you have heard me

If you've followed me for long, you have heard me wax on...and on and on...about how much I love The Scarlet Letter. I know it gets a bad rap by those forced to read it in High School who found it boring. I, however, find the story of religious fundamentalism, gossip, and slut-shaming to be one of the most relevant stories ever written.

Today's quote is a particularly good one. I have often heard people discuss how important and rejuvenating it is to meet with likeminded people. Not often do you get reminded of how much healthier it is (for the individual and society at large) to regularly befriend those different than you.

Did you know: Nathaniel Hawthorne changed the spelling of his last name (it had been Hathorne) in order to disassociate from his ancestor who was one of the religious leaders during the Salem Witch Trials, responsible for the brutal killing of many women (and a few men, as well.) Nathaniel convinced one of his sisters to change her name to the new spelling, too.
